Piarista anekdoták

A válogatás az alábbi kiállításra készült:

1. Szlopnyai Elek (1690–1752)

When the Piarists first came to Debrecen in 1719, they held a Corpus Christi procession, viewed with suspicion by the elders of the Reformed church. A month later, the town was destroyed by fire. All that survived was the area around the Catholic church and the route of the altar sacrament, where the parish priest, Alexius Szlopnyai, had given the blessing. The Reformed church burgesses considered this to be a conjuring trick, but in the following years, quite a few people, just to be sure, called out to the priest during the procession:

‘Reverend, bring that shiny thing to my house too!’

– felelte a festő.

The Polish artist Joannes Bojowsky painted an altarpiece of St Joseph Calazanz in the Piarist Church of Prievidza in 1753. It shows the saint floating on a cloud, surrounded by angels, interceding with the Virgin Mary and her Holy Son for the children of Prievidza, who can be seen praying and studying below. Father Hyacinthus Hanghe of Moravia, the superintendent of works for the new church, visited the painter several time a day, observing how he worked. Once he enquired,

‘Why have you painted a biretta (a priest’s cap) on that angel? Have you ever seen an angel in a biretta?’

‘Why, has the Reverend Father ever seen an angel without a biretta?’

3. Cseh Ferenc (1809–1883)

– Tisztelendőségednél okosabb ember nincs a szegedi piaristák közt?

– Ó, dehogy nincs – felelte Cseh nyugodtan – a többi mind okosabb, mint én, de úgy gondolták, hogy ide én is jó leszek.

P. Ferenc Cseh fought in the National Guard during the 1848 Revolution, and was taken captive. After his release, he went to Szeged. In 1850, he led a Piarist delegation in a delicate matter to the county commander István Bonyhády-Perczel. This Austrian official was a well-read Hungarian gentleman, but a notorious anti-revolutionary. He gave the delegation a cool reception, and asked Ferenc Cseh with a contemptuous smirk,

‘Is the Reverend Father the cleverest person the Szeged Piarists could have sent?’

Cseh calmly replied, ‘Oh no, the others are all cleverer than me, but they thought I would do to come here.’

4. Budavári József (1813–1897)

Szegeden Budavári József egyszer a tanterembe lépve a tanári asztalon egy krétával rajzolt szamárfejet pillantott meg.

– Igenis, – mondta, föltalálva magát – aki itt felejtette az arcképét, legyen szíves innen elvinni.

One day, upon entering his classroom in Szeged, József Budavári found the image of a donkey’s head drawn in chalk on the teacher’s table.

‘Well, well,’ he said, and then collected himself. ‘Whoever has left his self-portrait on the table, please come and take it away.’

The physics and mathematics teacher József Szabó was famously strict. If a child could not answer one of his questions, he sent him out of the classroom. Once, a student of his in Vác, Pista Forgó, had not prepared. P. Szabó wanted to be lenient, and sent him back to his place with the warning that if he could not give the right answer next time, he should take his hat and go out, without a word. In the mathematics class next day, P. Szabó once again called out Pista Forgó to answer questions. Pista stood up from his desk, went straight to the coat stand, put on his hat, and left the classroom.

6.

Above the entrance to the Piarist school in Vác was a dove symbolising the Holy Spirit, perched on a rod. The dove disappeared, but the rod remained, with the inscription Hic omnia docebit vos. (And He will teach you everything.)

Végre megmondja a tanár: Dugonics András. A jelölt arca felderült és kivágta:

– Ó, tudom már, tanár úr. Az, aki Belgrádban lelökött egy törököt.

At a private examination in Sátoraljaújhely, József Abelsberg asked the examinee who had written the first Hungarian novel. The boy did not know. Abelsberg gave him a clue by asking another question, but still received no answer. Eventually, the teacher said, ‘András Dugonics’. The boy’s face lit up, and said brightly,

‘Oh yes, sir, I know. That soldier [the legendary Titusz Dugovics] who knocked the Turk off the wall in Belgrade.’

8. Lóky Béla (1872–1946)

Lóky Béla igazgató egyik évben elvállalta a szilveszteri beszédet a piarista templomban.

The Principal, Béla Lóky, undertook to give the New Year’s Eve speech in the Piarist school one year. Only one sentence has survived for posterity: ‘If we are in trouble in the New Year, we should trust in heavenly Providence, because Providence always helps – if it can.’

9. Friedreich Endre (1878–1952)

An enquiring mother went to Endre Friedreich, a teacher in the Budapest school, and said with a charming smile,

‘What a fine life you teachers lead, always among children, and maintaining your youth.’

‘Oh yes, we’re gradually getting as stupid as they are,’ responded ‘Bandi bácsi’.

10. Biró Imre (1883–1972)

Biró Imre nyugalomba vonulása után is aktív maradt. Méltatlankodva mondta egyszer: „Nincs semmire sem időm, nem is értem, hogy értem rá tanítani.”

Imre Biró remained active after retiring. Once he said in a frustrated tone, ‘I don’t have time for anything. I don’t understand how I ever fitted in any teaching.’

In the view of József Öveges, ‘the most honourable grade is “satisfactory”, and we should indeed be satisfied with it. Grades like “good” and “excellent” are just luxuries.’

The Principal at Sátoraljaújhely, Jenő Németh, was holding an classification meeting. A student called Vilmos Juhász (‘William Sheperd’) got ‘unsatisfactory’ in two subjects, and thus failed, having had good marks before then. According to his form teacher (head of the class), he was distracted by the girls. P. Németh confronted the boy with the comment:

‘So you see, my boy, that’s how William the Conqueror becomes the Sorrowful Shepherd.’

In autumn 1944, György Sulhan remained in Sátoraljaújhely with only one assistant to look after the house, the school, the garden and the vineyard. In summer 1945, he asked his superior to be released. In his place, he recommended his greatest helper, Ambrus Horváth. The Provincial thanked him for his services, but rejected the proposal with the comment that Ambrus was still somewhat young for the post. Sulhan replied, ‘I only dared recommend Ambrus because I thought that if Christ could save the world at the age of 33, then Ambrus should be able to manage the Sátoraljaújhely house at the age of 38.’

14. Bozi Ferenc (1903–1979)

Én is voltam diák! – és megkezdte a feleltetést.

P. Ferenc Bozi taught army studies in the 1940s, a universally-hated subject, once a week. One rainy day, in an attempt to cause a distraction from the subject, one boy at the start of the class asked what effect the rain would have on agriculture. Bozi gave the student disdainful look and said:

‘O come no, my son, don’t be naive. I was also a schoolboy once!’ And he started up the questions on the previous week’s class.

Father József Jochs loved all animals, large and small. He kept grey and white mice, a crow, an owl, and many others. When Csaba Botár, one of his fellows in the Kecskemét Piarist house, suggested that a rat-catcher dog called Csöpi should be put to sleep because he was no longer able to catch a mouse let alone a rat, Jochs leapt to the animal’s defence:

‘P. Botár can’t catch rats either, but he’s allowed to live!

A tanár azonban megnyugtatta:

– Nézd, fiam! A Tuba tanár úr se járt még a pokolban, és mégis eltanítgatja a hittant.

One student, some time in the 1980s, asked his Russian teacher P. József Holczer whether he had ever been to the Soviet Union, and was devastated to hear the answer ‘no’. The teacher reassured him.

‘Look, my son. P. Tuba has never been to Hell, but he’s perfectly capable of teaching religious studies.’
