We can search for the discoverers of unknown lands or species among the Piarists in vain. Although the first Piarists travelled a lot, they did so only between the houses of the order. Only some of them reached Rome which meant an enduring experience for them. A Piarist as tourist became common phenomenon only from the end of the 19th century. Some went further than the borders of Europe and visited the Holy Land or Northern America.

Geography known from books and maps was part of the grammar school curriculum, but they did not teach biological studies until 1777. It had a more serious content after the introduction of teaching in Hungarian from 1844. The text books of János Hanák (1812–1849) had a pioneering role. His followers found their research area not in remote lands, but rather in the hidden natural treasures of their own environment, such as Dezső Laczkó (1860–1932) in the geological strata of Veszprém, or József Kender (1913–1961) in the living creatures of the Tata thermal waters.
